Samhain Special Butoh Movement Meditation: The Thinning Veil with Maya Kaufmann

As the wheel of the year turns toward Samhain, the veil between worlds grows thin. In this season of endings, ancestral remembrance, and transformation, we are invited to turn inward and meet what lives beneath the surface. This special Samhain class is a ritual journey into the shadow: an exploration of the parts of ourselves we have hidden, the identities we are ready to shed, and the wild, unfamiliar selves waiting to emerge. Through Butoh, an experimental dance form that explores the body's hidden landscapes through imagery, sensation, and transformation, we will move through a guided sequence of somatic exercises, Butoh-fu (scripted poetic movement imagery), and free improvisation. Together, we will explore the thinning veil, the ancestral ground beneath our feet, the shadows we carry, and the strange beauty of dissolution and renewal. We will give movement to what has been buried, practice releasing what no longer serves us, and listen for the creature that lives beneath the familiar self. Class structure: Intention Setting: Arrive in the space, ground into the body, and set a personal intention for the ritual. Somatic Warm-Up: Awaken the senses, soften habitual patterns, and prepare the body for deeper exploration. Guided Butoh-fu: Enter a series of poetic movement scores exploring the thinning veil, ancestral memory, shadow work, shedding, and transformation. Free Improvisation: Follow the body's impulses and allow your own movement language to emerge from the spoken poetic imagery and sensations. Integration Circle: Return to stillness, reflect on the journey, and carry what you've discovered back into the everyday world. No previous dance experience is necessary. This class is open to all bodies and levels of experience. There is no choreography to memorize and no right or wrong way to move. You are invited to participate at your own pace, adapt each prompt to your needs, and follow whatever feels authentic in your body. Come as you are. Bring your curiosity, your contradictions, and whatever you are ready to meet in the dark. The veil is thinning. What will you meet there?
