Shibari 401: Inversions

🕑 4:00 - 6:00 PM (Doors Open @ 3:45 | Doors Close @ 4:10)

📍 Devil Mask Studio - DTLA

🎟️ $50 per person | Memberships accepted

Inversions in suspension are deceptively complex. This class is a deep dive into the mechanics and artistry of inversion in suspensions. We'll explore how to create and sustain challenging shapes, including creating ‘rest’ positions.

Expect focused instruction on structural requirements, harness selection, and suspension line management, as well as in-air techniques for communication, adjustment, and scene pacing. We'll also cover what makes inversions both exciting and risky - and how to handle that risk with care, clarity, and intention.

Whether your goal is intensity, exposure, or just a new view on the room, this class offers the tools to go there.

We’ll cover:

– What to consider when picking harnesses for inversions

– Why we do (and don’t) love playing with ‘the upside down’ - including tricks for creating ‘rest’ positions mid-sequence

– How to get into (and out of) inversions with care and grace

This class is part of our Shibari 401 class track, taught on the first Saturday and fourth Sunday of the month.

401 classes are for tying pairs who are already working in full suspension. We won’t be teaching upline mechanics, but we will dig deep into the structure, sensation, and scene-building potential of suspension forms. Expect hands-on time, conceptual depth, and plenty of room to explore.

You Should Know:

– Students tying should be very comfortable tying both uplines and harnesses on the body. Not sure if that’s you? Join us for a Shibari 301 workshop for a refresher.

– Students being tied should have some experience communicating while in rope and processing intense sensations.

– Students should be comfortable giving and receiving feedback.

– We will not be teaching uplines in this class - please review them in advance.

You Should Bring:

– Your full rope kit - enough rope to tie both an upper- and lower-body harness, plus several uplines - and a cutting tool

– Harnesses you are already familiar with (your own or classic patterns)

– A notebook or something to take notes on

– Curiosity and a collaborative attitude
