Torsion is the rotation of body parts in different directions relative to one another. In this workshop, we’ll explore how to apply this twisty, challenging effect in suspension. Expect hands-on focus on structure, harness choice, communication, and the in-air techniques to wring every last drop out of a tie.
This class isn't an exploration of static recipes - it’s about adaptation and problem-solving in motion. You’ll practice creating and applying torsions with harnesses you're already familiar with and explore the unique challenges this twisting force creates in suspension.
We’ll Cover
– How to tie harnesses that need to endure torque
– Ways to explore torsion while managing the increased risk inherent to the force
– Tools for clear communication and adaptive problem-solving in the air
This class is part of our Shibari 401 class track, taught on the first Saturday and fourth Sunday of the month.
401 classes are for tying pairs who are already working in full suspension. We won’t be teaching upline mechanics, but we will dig deep into the structure, sensation, and scene-building potential of suspension forms. Expect hands-on time, conceptual depth, and plenty of room to explore.
You Should Know:
– Students tying should be very comfortable tying both uplines and harnesses on the body. Not sure if that’s you? Join us for a Shibari 301 workshop for a refresher.
– Students being tied should have some experience communicating while in rope and processing intense sensations.
– Students should be comfortable giving and receiving feedback.
– We will not be teaching uplines in this class - please review them in advance.
You Should Bring:
– Your full rope kit - enough rope to tie both an upper- and lower-body harness, plus several uplines - and a cutting tool
– Harnesses you are already familiar with (your own or classic patterns)
– A notebook or something to take notes on
– Curiosity and a collaborative attitude
