Shibari 401: Upright Suspensions

🕓 4:00 – 6:00 PM (Doors Open @ 3:45 | Doors Close @ 4:10)

📍 Devil Mask Studio - DTLA

🎟️ Ticketed for one tying pair or one auditor – Memberships accepted

Upright suspensions give us some of rope's most iconic shapes: The Running Person, the M Shape, Kata Ashi.... There are infinite variations on this deceptively simple orientation.

This class is a deep dive into vertical suspension. We’ll explore why these poses have become staples in rope, what makes them so compelling to both tops and bottoms, and how to riff on their structure to meet your scene goals.

Expect guided demos, discussion of mechanics and body placement, and hands-on time to experiment with variations. Whether you're aiming for grace, grit, or something in between, this is your playground.

This class is part of our Shibari 401 class track, taught on the first Saturday and fourth Sunday of the month.

401 classes are for tying pairs who are already working in full suspension. We won’t be teaching upline mechanics, but we will dig deep into the structure, sensation, and scene-building potential of suspension forms. Expect hands-on time, conceptual depth, and plenty of room to explore.

You Should Know How To:

  • Tie suspension-worthy harnesses
  • Create and attach uplines

You Should Bring:

  • A complete suspension kit (carabiners, ring or rigging plate, hardware, etc.)
  • Suspension-worthy harnesses you’ve already used
  • A partner you can communicate well with - especially when things get intense
  • Curiosity and a readiness to push your practice further
